Automatic Fire Control System (AFCS)

One of the K9 Thunder's greatest strengths is its Automatic Fire Control System (AFCS). The system is integrated with GPS and an Inertial Navigation System (INS) through a digital fire-control network, allowing the howitzer to receive firing data, calculate ballistic solutions, and prepare for firing in approximately 30 seconds.

3. Ballistic Calculations

After receiving the target coordinates, the Fire Control Computer automatically calculates the required firing solution using:

  • The gun's current position
  • Target coordinates
  • Wind speed and direction
  • Air temperature
  • Humidity
  • Barrel temperature
  • Ammunition characteristics

These calculations ensure maximum firing accuracy.

4. Automatic Gun Laying

Once the ballistic solution has been calculated, the Fire Control System automatically commands the hydraulic drive system to traverse and elevate the gun to the correct azimuth and elevation. This significantly reduces crew workload and enables rapid engagement of targets.

5. Guided Projectile Integration

The K9A1 and later variants are compatible with GPS-guided projectiles, including the M982 Excalibur.

Before firing, an electronic fuze setter transfers mission data—including target coordinates and fuze settings—to the projectile. After launch, the projectile uses its onboard GPS receiver and guidance fins to continuously correct its flight path, allowing it to strike the designated target with high precision.

Combat Experience

The K9 Thunder saw its first combat during the Bombardment of Yeonpyeong on 23 November 2010, when Republic of Korea Marine Corps K9 howitzers returned counter-battery fire following a North Korean artillery attack.
