China's Heavyweight Carrier Fighter Enters a New Era

The Shenyang J-15 Flying Shark (歼-15 飞鲨) is China's first operational carrier-based fighter aircraft and remains the backbone of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) carrier aviation force. From Ski-Jump Fighter to CATOBAR Aircraft

The original J-15 was designed for China's first two aircraft carriers—Liaoning and Shandong—which use ski-jump ramps (STOBAR).

While effective for air-defense missions, ski-jump launches limited payload and fuel, preventing the aircraft from taking off with maximum weapon loads.

To solve this problem, Shenyang developed the J-15T, featuring:

  • Structural strengthening
  • Compatibility with electromagnetic catapults (EMALS)
